I like Rock ‘n’ Roll
It has no color because it speaks to the soul
In years gone by when racial tension was high
People sang to release the pain they came to know
A smokey juke joint with chairs worn from use
a dance floor and a spot light where expectations are loosed
I like Rock ‘n’ Roll
It isn’t Black or White
It is the way so many have connected night after night
It is easy to forget about the role music played in civil rights issues. When people felt that their voices were ignored in society, they found power in lyrics and poetry. Music became the way to express pain, injustice, hope, and strength. More than that, music served as a bridge across racial issues. Soul music and Blues took white listeners by surprise by moving them in ways they’d never experienced. This is what Memphis is about: Huey, a young white man, visits Beale street and falls in love with the music he discovers there in a Black nightclub. This musical is about race in the 1950, music, and identity.
Lucky for us, just in time for Black History Month the Walton Arts Center is bringing Memphis to Fayetteville. Enter in the Rafflecopter below for your chance to win two tickets to the show on OPENING NIGHT!
